Why Audi headlights tend to suffer

Audis are well-known for their detailed multi-element headlight designs — DRLs, projector beams, sweeping daytime running lamps. When the outer lens hazes, all that intricate work behind it looks dull and tired even though it's perfectly fine underneath. The good news is the lens is the bit that ages, so restoration brings the whole headlight back to looking new without touching the LED or xenon hardware behind it.

How the restoration works on a Audi

The process is the same regardless of make — what changes is the masking, the time taken on more complex headlight units, and the care needed around the specific lens shape. Steps:

1. Inspection & masking. We check the lens for internal damage or cracks (we won't carry on if restoration won't fix it) and tape off paintwork, trim and Audi-specific badges or panels around the headlight.
2. Multi-stage wet-sanding. Coarse through to 3000 grit removes the oxidised UV-damaged top layer of polycarbonate completely.
3. Machine polishing. Cutting compound restores optical clarity. Audi headlights with deep multi-element designs get extra attention to make sure clarity is even across the lens.
4. UV ceramic sealant. Professional-grade UV protection — included with every Audi we do. This is what makes the result last years rather than months.

Audi restoration vs new OEM headlights

Audi OEM headlight units are notoriously pricey — a single Matrix LED unit on an A6 or A8 can be £1500–£3000 from the dealer, before fitting and coding. Even a basic A3 unit is well into the hundreds. Restoration is a fraction of that cost and there's no coding required because we're not touching the electronics — just bringing the outer lens back to factory-clear.
